Although I have never been particularly excited by making music
(unless excited means miserably nervous), I feel that music has been
something that I really enjoy for quite some time. Early on my musical
interests were primarily constrained to 60's and 70's rock. I did
enjoy some rap and heavy alternative music, after all I was feeling
rebellious, but my interest were largely constrained to rock. From
Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, my interests slowly morphed towards the
Greatful Dead (in a big way).
It wasn't until college was well under way that I started
expanding out much at all (unless you consider Phish to be a drastic
expansion from those, which I don't), with the exception of expanding
my interest in Jazz.
When I moved to Chapel Hill I became excited about the
trading of live legal music, through furthur (like Napster or Kazaa,
except that all of the music was legal and much of it was other file
formats). I also dabbled in Kazaa, though I was immediately frustrated
by the sound quality and the difficulty in finding what you want.
Then I had a big classical music phase, and started buying
many more albums of different styles (within classical I particularly
like Liszt, Bartok, Dvorak, Tchaikovski, Janachek, Beethoven, and
Chopin).
Most recently I have been excited to expand to music from other
countries: in various parts of latin America and Africa that I was
previously unfamiliar with. I also seriously enjoy some hip hop/rap
including: Tribe, Digable Planets, Mos Def, and the Roots.
